Being a leader and building up a team you can work with – either in your own business or somebody else's – requires a different set of skills to just being someone who works for a company or is a one man/ one woman band.  It also requires a change of mindset.  In particular, you need to stop thinking about what you can do yourself and start thinking about how you can utilize the skills of other people instead.

I got my first management job straight out of college.  It was a fairly lowly middle management job for a large corporation.  When my boss wanted something done, my first reaction was to do it myself because that's what I knew.  It came as a shock when there were all these people standing around waiting for me to delegate tasks to them.

Thankfully my boss was understanding, and knew I was young and inexperienced.  She was prepared to show me what to do and how to be a good manager.  These skills came in handy when I started my own business. I can think of others, though, who weren't so fortunate.
